Man Sent to Prison for attack on father; dog

November 21, 2006

State Attorney Steve Meadows announces the sentencing today, in Bay County Circuit Court, of Stephen Duane Bibbs, on charges of Battery on a Person 65 or older, Attempted Cruelty to an Animal, and Criminal Mischief.

Bibbs, 37, of Jan Avenue in Callaway, entered a plea, with no agreement, to the charges in connection with the February 26, 2006, attack on his father, his parents’ house, and their dog. According to the evidence proffered to the court, the younger Bibbs was drunk and angry when he struck his 79-year old father, attempted to choke the dog, and kicked in the front door. His mother broke a lamp over his head to stop the attack on her husband.

Though he had no prior felony record, Bibbs was sentenced to 24 months prison, followed by 36 months probation. He will be required to complete an alcohol abuse evaluation and counseling while on probation. Under Florida law, Bibbs must serve 85 per cent of his sentence.
